Michael Schwanz, Diplom-Wirtschaftsinformatiker (DHBW)

After receiving a degree in business computer science (DHBW), Michael Schwanz worked for over six years as a consultant in the field of Management Information Systems and was involved in the implementation of planning applications. Today he is managing director of eNovation Consulting GmbH. Today he is managing director of HighCoordination GmbH. He is responsible for the HICHERT®SUCCESS extension for the QlikView BI tool as well as for the consulting division of business communication.

He is of the opinion that the HICHERT®SUCCESS method can be consistently applied cost-efficiently in all organizational and functional departments. The same is true for the classic cockpit segment, the corresponding drilldown scenarios, as well as for operative line item reporting.

Example 1

Structural Waterfall of Helsana Gruppe

The values visualized here are taken from page 39 of the consolidated Earnings Statement 2011of Helsana Gruppe.

The waterfall visualization illustrates the value ratios of the results for the fiscal year, without deviating from the context of a strict earnings statement. The aim is to convey a correct feeling for the results and thus for the business of Helsana Versicherungen AG without omitting important items.

The following items of style provide a good level of readability despite a high level of information density:

+Differentiation between the delta, subtotal, and grand total rows through bold type and hyphens.

+Colored differentiation between the positive and negative value streams.

+Sign inversion and reversal of the original colors in negative values (for example, costs(, since, as opposed to balances or positive values like them, they should be treated differently.

+Visualization of the data types in the columns. As a result a minimal y-axis is possible. Values close to the y-axis could potentially be read much better.

Criticism:

+Due to their high volatility stemming from the individual line items in the earnings statement, the delta% values could be omitted. Instead, an increase in the absolute delta values could provide significant added value.

+The values crossing the y-axis are hard to read in many cases. They could also be placed to the left or right of the axis depending direction of movement. This does not, however, dispense with space.

Example 2

Structure with deviation values

This example is based on sample data and, like the waterfall, was generated using the QlikView extension.

The example is borrowed from the application scenario of a navigable web interface.

In dynamic interfaces, a special role is played by the correct, context-dependent positioning of all elements, for example:

+the dynamic, space-dependent labeling with the chart,

+the positioning of message elements, for example, highlighting in the form of a bar comparison,

+as well as the observance of uniform surface measures.

Since, however, the company standard HICHERT®SUCCESS already provides all the basic parameters, this already provides for a clear chart or table visualization.

Criticism:

+Words in capital letters are harder to read than labeling written in normal print and should be omitted for this reason. Abbreviations and/or proper names are the exceptions to this recommendation.

+The information density could be increased further. For example, the result of the previous period or, even more important, the forecasted future would be interesting.
