More and more business reports putting a lot of effort into transforming the reality behind the figures into circles or pie wedges, torus shapes, spider charts, rings, and other graphic displays equally ill-suited for quick comprehension. 


Unfortunately, the case is no different at many major companies either: The following is a random selection of what shareholders have to put up with: decoration instead of information...

"Multi-pie" to get around the low level of information density of a pie chart: The area here is proportional to market size, the dark section represents own sales, in other words, the market share. This is one of the few meaningful applications of pie charts...

This iPhone app looks nice – but it is not a good visualization of this type of simple data. In this instance, a classic comparison of bars would be understood faster and better.
   

Xcelsius

An excerpt taken from a proposed dashboard. A pie chart like this is bad enough – but what about this legend?! Here you will find further examples. Xcelsius from BO or SAP is an interesting product, but I unfortunately could not find any convincing examples on SAP’s website. graphomate  is one of the Excelsius solutions we have certified and it is certainly worth a closer look (RH).
