Brainteaser 03

Task
Create the chart at the left using Excel 2003 (or 2007) without any programming.

Solution

Mr. Björn Rick, Stadtwerke Düren, and Mr. Dietmar Birkhölzer, BJB GmbH & Co. KG in Arnsberg, are the winners of this challenge. Mr. Rick sent us a very elegant solution, which can be downloaded here. Mr. Birkhölzer sent us two different solutions. Here we present his first solution based on the use of area charts, which can be downloaded here. We will be reporting on his second solution at a later point in time - it corresponds to the approach we ourselves had chosen. As a result, there are now three complete solutions for this brainteaser...! Our congratulations to both winners of this competition! Both received EUR 500 each.

Brainteaser 02

Task
Create the chart on the left using Excel 2003 (or 2007) without any programming.

Solution
The only functioning solution to this brainteaser was sent to us from Mr. Dietmar Birkhölzer of BJB GmbH & Co. KG in Arnsberg: Here you will find the download and here a short film.

On this solution Mr. Birkhölzer wrote on 27 Juli 2008:
"...Right after your very interesting seminars in Constance, I really wanted to put what I had learned to use. So Saturday afternoon I sat down at my laptop and tried it out. Naturally, the shifts in the individual pies could be carried out in even smaller steps. It is also  conceivable to limit the size of the pies with validity for up to 9 (more isn't possible at the moment anyway). But it was primarily a matter of displaying the four dimensions completely automatically and it worked. ... I needed about four hours to create it. Before that, I gave a great deal of thought to how to solve this..." Mr. Birkhölzer won EUR 500 - his suggested solution was only slightly different from our sample solution: A big compliment to Mr. Birkhölzer. There's not a lot of Excel experts who can manage this one...
