Give explanations: Understandable texts

Explanations include all short texts, such as clarifications, notes, and footnotes, which can provide better understanding of the message to be conveyed. As opposed to long texts consisting of several chapters and paragraphs, explanatory short texts contain either only one or a few sentences. The purpose of these texts is to provide brief and concise explanations which facilitate comprehension of the message.

1.4.1

Explain with precise words

The more unambiguous the language is, the clearer the message will be. Only precise words will be understood.

1.4.2

Integrate explanations into charts

The level of comprehension increases when comments are integrated into the charts. When the comment refers directly to the visual presentation in question, it helps to establish a connection and hence speeds up comprehension.

1.4.3

Connect comments to the table content
Comments on the tables should be numbered and assigned to the corresponding places in the table. This correlation can easily improve and facilitate comprehension.

1.4.4

Use long texts in handouts only, avoid them in slides

Long texts should not be used in slides projected on the wall – unless these texts are to be discussed. Long texts belong in handouts or written reports.

1.4.5

Name sources and definitions
Footnotes for general explanations, explanations of abbreviations, and to name sources increase the credibility of the content shown. They can be omitted from slides projected on the wall, but they must be included in written reports.
